Tyre Clamp

By Brian Simpson

Trying to hold the tyre for silver soldering can be a problem.

In the engineer’s vice it is awkward to position and the mass of metal in the vice acts as a heat sink making it difficult to reach the desired temperature for the solder to run.

The photo shows a way round this.

Two inexpensive spring clamps (50p each from the market) hold the tyre between two lengths of angle iron. It is relatively easy to position and a bonus is the clamps act as their own support. For larger tyres longer lengths of angle iron can be used. If the tyre is too large to allow the clamps to act as supports the whole set up can be rested on a couple of bricks so that the bottom of the tyre runs between them.
