HOLDING PANEL PINS AND RIVETS

By Rob Postlethwaite

Holding pins and rivets for converting into model bolts can be a problem. I have used panel pins of 1.0 or 1.6mm. diameter when I needed square headed bolts.

  1. Soften the head by heating to red and allowing to cool down.
  2. A bar of steel with a 1 or 1.6mm hole drilled in it has a saw cut made into the end down to and some way past the hole. This is a suitable device for holding the pins while shaping the head.
  3. The pin is placed in the hole and the bar griped in the vice closing the saw cut. This will hold the pin very tightly so that the head can be hammered down and filed into shape.

The device can also be used to hold pins for threading and there is no reason why several different size holes should not be in the same bar.
